Introduction to the BINNS Project

Updated: Jul 6, 2021

Hello! Welcome to our introduction to the BINNS Project!

Also known as Bio-control of Invasive Non-Native Species (BINNS). This is our long term project, specifically focusing on controlling Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam across our rivers.

We decided to create a little blog so that you can keep up with our current project, giving you updates of what we are doing and how well our biocontrol is doing over the next year!

So, before we go into detail about the invasive species that we are aiming to control, we want to thank #GreenRecoveryChallengeFund for the funding for us to do this amazing project!

So what does it involve?

We are in the process of setting up 11 biocontrol sites using a rust fungus for Himalayan Balsam and 5 biocontrol sites using a nifty little psyllid for the Japanese Knotweed.

These are so amazing as they control the invasive species, without negatively impacting our native species! Over the next year we will be monitoring the impact of this biocontrol in the hope that they will result in long term, self-sustaining control of the invasive species!
